Jackie Arnold, expert speaker, executive coach and author, first founded the
Brighton and Hove speakers club for adults, more than 8 years ago. On the
back of it's success and her current work mentoring and coaching in
Education, Jackie decided it was time to offer young people the same
speaking opportunities and so the Young Speakers Award 2010 was launched.
The Project aims to encourage young people to:
Candidates:
First you need to make sure your school is listed on the website.
Talk to your teacher and let them know you are interested in taking part, or download an application form, direct from the website www.youngspeakersaward.co.uk fill it out and either email it back to us, or hand it to your teacher.
Only x6 candidates from each school will be accepted.
Successful schools and their candidates will be notified of their group’s 1st audition time slot and date by latest 23rd April 2010.

It’s time to get your students views and voices heard all over the City! If you are a participating school then you should have received your student application packs. Please note that only x6 candidates from each school will be accepted. Please make sure your students have been advised of the full requirements and have completed and returned a copy of the application form. Please notify us of the six candidates you would like to put forward for the Awards. If your school has not been listed, please contact us for participation information.
You will be asked to prepare and perform a speech lasting for 2-3 mins on the topic ‘My City Brighton and Hove’. Your interpretation of this topic is entirely up to you but remember you will be judged in the first instance on ‘originality and delivery’.
You will perform your speech in front of a panel of 3 Judges:

Ambrose Harcourt, Well known local radio presenter and PR consultant Jackie Arnold, Keynote speaker and author of “Raise Your Glasses Please” and “Speaking on Special Occasions”. John Shewell, Brighton and Hove Council’s Head of Communications. X20 Candidates will make it through to the live Heats.
After the audition speeches, the Judges will deliberate and later announce the x20 candidates who have made it through to the first Live Heat.
You will be given your 2nd speech details as well as information about the free mentoring workshops that will run before each Heat.
Candidates will be invited to a variety of free workshops where they will be
mentored on different aspects of their speeches and speaking skills to help
improve confidence, speech structure, vocal tone and variety.
Each workshop is designed to help prepare the candidates for their next
performance.
The live Heats are open to school representatives, parents and friends of the candidates to come and view the performances live. Each candidate will perform their speech in front of our panel of judges. After all the performances, the judges will deliberate and then make an announcement on who will be going through to the next round. x20 Candidates will be selected from the auditions to go through to the first Heat. x10 Candidates will be selected from the first Heat to go through to the second Heat. x6 Candidates will be selected from the second Heats to go through to the final.
The final event will be coupled with fundraising activities, raising money for Action for Children as well as the performances from the six finalists, there will be entertainment, raffles, prize auctions, and the Award ceremony for the Brighton and Hove Young Speaker of 2010.
X6 Final candidates will be chosen to perform at the final fundraiser.
Event location will be confirmed by 31st January 2010.
